Established in 1884, Spartanburg School District 7 has a rich tradition of excellence in education. Today, our mission to "inspire and equip our students for meaningful lives of leadership and service as world citizens," is emphasized in all that we do. Thanks to a long legacy of tremendous leadership in the District, our facilities are some of the finest in the Southeast. Our student outcomes speak to strong academics and innovative teaching and learning - both in and out of the classroom. 

District 7 is guided by a nine-member Board of Trustees, with more than 100 years of combined service.

Board Meetings are held in the District Office Board Room at 610 Dupre Drive. Meetings are scheduled for the first Tuesday of every month at 6pm. The Board does not routinely meet in December and July.

Spartanburg School District 7 is a small urban school district located in the heart of Upstate South Carolina. District 7 is a majority-minority district with a poverty index nearing 70%, a graduation rate of 85%, and a post-secondary enrollment rate that averages over 80% each year. The average student enrollment in the past three years is 7,300. The District employs 1,400 employees.

The District’s flagship Spartanburg High School, enjoys the following distinctions:

• An 85% graduation rate 
• More than 80% of graduates enroll in a 2 or 4-year college within two years of graduation
• Spartanburg High School is proud of its National Merit Semifinalists, U.S. Presidential Scholars and Rhodes Scholars distinctions. These are the highest academic honors available to secondary students and Spartanburg High School consistently leads the state in the number of students so honored.
• The high school’s passage rate for Advanced Placement tests is well above the state and national passage rate.
• Spartanburg High School was the first in the nation (public or private) to be awarded the US Department of Education’s National Blue Ribbon School award four times. Blue Ribbon Schools are selected for their overall academic achievement and their progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups. The highly coveted national award affirms the hard work of educators, families and communities in creating safe and welcoming schools where students master challenging and engaging content.
• Since the establishment of Advanced Placement Courses in SC’s public high schools, Spartanburg High School has offered more Advanced Placement courses than any other school (public or private) in South Carolina and its record of AP scores is among the best in the state.

• In 1973, District 7 was one of three school districts in the state awarded a grant by the Department of Education to develop a pilot program for gifted and talented students. Today, the District’s Odyssey program is lauded as one of the finest in the state and is a model program for districts across the nation.
• District 7 was among the first in the state to receive closed circuit instructional television from South Carolina Educational Television (SCETV). The District continues to partner with SCETV to access a wide range of programming for teachers and students.
• District 7 has long enjoyed regional acclaim for its commitment to music education. In 1953, D7 organized the first comprehensive orchestra program of its kind in South Carolina – affording children in grades 5-12 the opportunity to play and perform in a school orchestra. Today, the Spartanburg High School Orchestra and the Spartanburg High School Band are consistently honored with regional, state and national awards.
• Continuing in its innovative approach to education, District 7 offers one of the few Music Technology programs in the state. Students are given the opportunity to write and produce their own music using their school-issued computers.
• District 7 has a proud history of excellence in athletics. Today, more than 1,000 students participate in 24 varsity sports teams at Spartanburg High School.
• District 7 forged a bold path to eliminate the digital divide among students and implemented a dynamic 1:1 technology program that put mobile devices in the hands of every student in the District in grades 2-12. Cited by The League of Innovative Schools, Apple, Inc., and Future Ready Schools for its best practice efforts, the District’s commitment to blended and digital learning continues to advance student outcomes.

On March 15, 2016, the residents of D7 clearly expressed their expectations for the children of our community and their faith in the District’s capital plans for the future. With the endorsement of a $185 million bond measure, the District was positioned to fulfill a number of projects that have significantly advanced our school system.

As we implemented our Vision for 2020, we engaged District 7 faculty and staff, students and parents and a wide range of community partners and stakeholders. An overview of the most significant projects includes: 

• In fall 2018, D7 opened a new elementary school in the growing Drayton Mills Community. Designed for a capacity of 800 students, the modern learning spaces better accommodate and support collaboration and creativity in and out of the classroom. Our Drayton Mills Elementary Dalmatians love their new home!
• In fall 2019, D7 welcomed students and staff into a new Spartanburg High School. Designed for a core capacity of 2,500 students, the 177-acre site on the Eastside includes a 1,000-seat performing arts center and a comprehensive athletic complex with a 7,500-seat stadium and 2,500-seat arena.
• Following the opening of the new Spartanburg High School, the current high school on Dupre Drive was repurposed to make way for a new McCracken Middle School, which opened in fall 2020.
