Emergency Closing Information

  • children in the snow On mornings when school is being delayed or cancelled due to inclimate weather, the District 7 website (spartanburg7.org) and phone message system are the primary sources of communication to parents and staff. Whenever possible, a phone call from the District will go out to bus drivers, custodians, cafeteria managers, principals, and assistant principals at 5:00 AM, with information posted to the website shortly thereafter. Media outlets and social media are also a primary source for news of closings and delays.  The general call to our famlies and school staff will follow shortly thereafter. For any student who boards a bus prior to 6:00 AM, parents should check the homepage of the website or one of the media stations listed below. The following media outlets will have information about early dismissals, closings, and delays:

Television stations: WSPA, WYFF and Fox Carolina
Newspaper: GO Upstate (online) is the internet source for the Spartanburg Herald Journal

When school is on a two hour delay, your child’s bus should arrive very close to two hours late.  For example, if your child gets on the bus at 6:45 AM on regular schedule days, their bus should arrive around 8:45 AM on two hour delay days.  This can be earlier, however, due to buses not traveling all roads because of limited bus routes.

In making the decision to close or delay school, you should know that our Superintendent and transportation department is out as early as 3:00 AM driving and checking the roads. District officials are also in close contact with Emergency Services and local Law Enforcement. As is often the case in Spartanburg County, the seven school districts work hard to coordinate messaging and collaborate on closings.  If any part of the county is deemed too dangerous for driving, a closing or delay normally affects the entire county. Extremely cold temperatures in recent years has also prompted delays as many of our children are boarding buses before the sun comes up.

Please remember that all decisions about school closings or delays are made at the district level. All drivers, especially our teen drivers, are advised to use caution on mornings that school is in session but the possibility for ice or black ice still exists due to changing conditions.

While we hope for a winter with few interruptions to our school schedules and calendar, it's wise to be prepared in the event of inclement weather.  The safety of our students and employees will always be the top priority of the District 7.
