Picture of McCracken Middle School

School Facilities

  • The building consists of brick and block with a metal deck roof system for the outer shell and metal stud/plaster inner partitions. The outside design is of a Midwestern design chosen by the School Board at that time. The school sits on a 29 acre site. The original building was designed by two groups of joint venture architects: Louis Saur and Associates from St. Louis, MO. and Westmoreland-McGarrity-Pitts, from Spartanburg. Open design was incorporated into every area with a Commons area that acted as the hub for the entire building. Original square footage was 114,845 sq. ft. A major renovation was completed in 2000, bringing the total to 154,779 sq. ft. This renovation, designed by McMillan Smith & Partners, included a science wing addition, classroom face lifts building wide, accessibility updates, and a major HVAC and plumbing renovation.

Inside the school, visitors are greeted by a modern waiting area and office. Once in the building, the focal point is a beautiful rounded brick foyer which swerves as an entry to the office. The main hallway leads to a beautiful rotunda painted with a mural by local artist, Larry Mauldin featuring great leaders from history. Moving further into the building, you arrive at a courtyard with a water feature and seating for students to congregate and eat lunch on sunny days. Visitors will find vaulted ceilings, courtyards and many other points of architectural interest through out the building.

Technology abounds throughout this facility, as in all of our facilities, with school information and breaking news showing continuously on flat panel screens in the Commons area. In the classrooms, Promethean/Interwrite boards and projectors aid teachers in distributing knowledge to inquisitive minds. Our building was recently outfitted with secure and guest wifi to support our 1 to 1 device immersion. Most classrooms have received ceiling mounted projectors that put the teacher’s computer and school broadcasts on the white boards, making the television a thing of the past in these rooms. Upstairs, a modern library, with natural lighting and computers spread throughout the floor space, contribute to the research that occurs here daily. Security has been enhanced at the facility with the upgrading and addition of cameras throughout the building, a buzzer door front door entry to the building, and a biometric entry for staff members. Recent updates to the athletic fields have taken place as well with a completely renovated field, wireless scoreboard and bleachers. Our gym is currently being completely renovated with paint, graphics, giant screen and projector, along with new lighting.
