Dr. Russell W. Booker
Dr. Russell W. Booker began his tenure as Superintendent of Spartanburg County School District Seven in July of 2010. With a heart for children and an unwavering faith in the power of education, Dr. Booker believes our greatest hope for the future is to inspire and equip our students for meaningful lives and service as world citizens.
Dr. Booker received his BS degree in Education from Wingate University in North Carolina and his Doctorate from the University of South Carolina-Columbia. In 2015, Dr. Booker was named the South Carolina Superintendent of the Year by the South Carolina Association of School Administrators (SCASA) and was also named Superintendent of the Year by the South Carolina Athletic Administrators Association. He is a past-president of SCASA’s Superintendents’ Division.
Described as an inspirational leader and a champion for children, Dr. Booker has been instrumental in a wide variety of progressive initiatives during the course of his tenure with District 7. Dr. Booker is a South Carolina Liberty Fellow and a graduate of the Diversity Leaders Initiative through the Riley Institute, and the Spartanburg Regional Fellows program. He is a member of the Spartanburg Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., The Southside Lions Club, the Spartanburg NAACP and The Spartanburg Downtown Rotary Club. Dr. Booker is Vice Chair of the Liberty Fellows Board of Directors; he is a past Chair of the United Way of the Piedmont, a board member with the Spartanburg Academic Movement (SAM), Spartanburg Village Network, and the Spartanburg Commission of Higher Education. In 2013, Dr. Booker received the Whitney M. Young, Jr. Humanitarian Award from the Urban League of the Upstate and in the summer of 2015 was inducted into the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) Hall of Fame as a Distinguished Alumnus.
Dr. Booker and his wife Sheryl have been married for 21 years and are the proud parents of two sons, Grant (15) and Maxwell (13). They are members of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church and reside on the Eastside of Spartanburg County. Dr. Booker is a native of Spartanburg.
