On Wednesday, May 12, South Carolina Superintendent of Education Molly Spearman lifted the Department of Education’s face covering requirement for all South Carolina schools. This action follows an executive order issued May 11 by Governor McMaster that provides a mask opt-out process for parents and leaves school districts with no grounds for continuing to enforce mask requirements inside of our schools. A federal executive order remains place that requires students to wear masks on school buses. To read the Executive Order, click here.
Spartanburg School District 7 continues to encourage mask wearing for the remainder of this school year and notes SCDHEC’s guidance that says, “wearing face masks…is an important disease prevention method that protects not only the person wearing the mask but also those around them from COVID-19.”
In response to the actions of the South Carolina Department of Education and Governor, SCDHEC has created a parent/guardian consent form for students to opt out of wearing a mask at school.
This form was sent home with all in-person students. If your family decides that your child will no longer wear a mask in school, please return this completed form to your school. A downloadable version of the form is also available here in Spanish.
If you do not know your child's student ID # just leave it blank.
District 7 appreciates the support and understanding of our parents, families and community as we work to protect the safety of our students and staff, and have a successful end to the school year.
