Pine Street Elementary School, one of the oldest schools in Spartanburg County, is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Our doors opened for the first time in the fall of 1929. The Great Depression gloomily greeted our nation, and twelve teachers enthusiastically met their students in grades 1-5. Classes were filled with over thirty students who learned reading, writing, and arithmetic in straight, quiet rows as the portraits of George Washington and the American flag with 48 stars kept watch over them.

During the 1930s, Mr. Jervey DuPre became the principal and stayed in that position for 37 years. He allowed orphans living on Crystal Drive to attend school here and when America joined WWII, patriotic fever became contagious at Pine Street School. Mothers rolled bandages in empty classrooms and students purchased war bonds on Fridays. The lunchroom was added (in our current art rooms) and students no longer walked home every day for lunch. The scrumptious aroma of those famous rolls drifted through the halls as students completed their lessons as well as wrote letters to the soldiers.
The war ended, and the 1950s brought the Baby Boom to Spartanburg. Pine Street School added a new “E-Wing” (our current first-grade hall) and the cafeteria was made larger. Extracurricular classes, including physical education, music, and French were also new additions.

After 37 years as principal, Mr. DuPre retired in 1975.  Perrin Powell, Rick Dizbon, Tommy Stokes, and Anne Jeter continued to lead our fine school with an excellent reputation that was so renowned that the school could no longer accommodate all of the families who moved to our neighborhood. The Board of Trustees thankfully voted to make additions to the school instead of relocating it. The expanded related arts area, cafeteria, and new media center now allow for Pine Street School to be the largest elementary school in the city of Spartanburg.

This year, we are celebrating 93 years of excellence at Pine Street Elementary School.  Mr. Dennis Regnier is our current (only the 7th) principal, and we are looking boldly to the future and another 90 years of great student achievement and success as your neighborhood school - "Where Excellence is Expected and is Our Standard!"
