Cold & Flu Season is Here!

As cold and flu season gets underway, Carver Middle School families can help us keep our school community healthy by encouraging healthy habits, knowing when children should stay home from school and making sure necessary medications are available to the school nurse.

Help Us Keep Our School Community Healthy

Encourage your child to:

  • Wash hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

  • Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or elbow.

  • Avoid touching the face, especially the eyes, nose and mouth.

  • Get plenty of rest, eat nutritious foods and stay hydrated.

Get the Flu Vaccine

The flu vaccine is recommended for everyone 6 months of age and older.

Families can get their child's flu vaccine by:

  • Scheduling an appointment with your child's doctor.

  • Contacting the local health department at 1-855-472-3432.

  • Visiting a participating pharmacy. Many pharmacies offer flu vaccines to individuals age 3 and older.

  • Using the SC Department of Public Health's Vaccine Finder to locate a provider near you.

When to Stay Home From School

Fever: A temperature of 100.4°F or higher along with a behavior change or other signs of illness. Your child may return when they have been fever-free for 24 hours without using fever-reducing medicine.

Diarrhea: Three or more loose stools within a 24-hour period. Your child may return when they have no more than two stools above their normal.

Rash: A rash associated with a change in behavior, fever, tenderness or oozing, or an open wound that cannot be covered.

Vomiting: Unexplained vomiting that has occurred two or more times within a 24-hour period. Your child may return when they are well enough to participate in routine activities.

Information about specific illnesses can be found on the SC Department of Public Health School & Childcare Exclusion List.

Important Medication Reminder

If your child has a prescription for an inhaler or EpiPen, please bring the medication to the school nurse in its original packaging with the pharmacy label, along with the Prescription Medication Form signed by both the doctor and parent/guardian.
