Sixteen students from SHS Library Ambassadors joined other schools this month for a meeting of the Somewhat Virtual Book Club, a multi-school reading group that connects students over great books. This month’s read was The Counselors by bestselling author Jessica Goodman, which was a mystery packed with secrets, summer camp drama, and one unforgettable twist.
Hosted by SHS senior and club president Ameerah Abouelenein, the discussion focused on favorite and least favorite characters, plot points, character development, and whether readers would want a sequel. The meeting brought out different opinions, but everyone agreed it was fun to hear what other students thought about the book.
One highlight of the meeting was hearing advice from author Jessica Goodman, who encouraged students to read as much as you can and in as many different genres as you can, adding that it’s the best way to grow both as a reader and a thinker.
“What I enjoyed most about the meeting was getting to see how students from other schools shared their opinions on the book,” Sydney-Elizabeth Lomax said. “It was exciting to talk with others about a topic I’m genuinely interested in and to see how everyone interpreted the story in their own way.”
Chloe Monosso added, “I really enjoyed how we were able to discuss the book with other schools and were able to talk about what we enjoyed and what we disliked.”
Next month’s book is Rez Ball by Byron Graves, and 15 spots will be available for SHS Vikings who want to join. Keep an eye out for announcements if you’re interested in being part of Somewhat Virtual Book Club!
Whether you're a mystery fan or just love a good book, the Somewhat Virtual Book Club is a great way to read something new, share your thoughts, and hear different perspectives from students across the country.
