Maya A

We’re excited to celebrate senior Maya Abouelenein, who has been accepted to the University of Edinburgh in Scotland! Ever since taking a trip to Europe as a sophomore, studying abroad has been something that’s always interested her! When she had the chance to visit Edinburgh on a trip, she knew it was a place she could see herself calling home.

Maya plans to major in Arabic and Politics with the goal of becoming an international lawyer. With her dad being from Egypt and much of her family speaking Arabic, Maya has been learning the language with the help of her aunt and hopes to continue building fluency.

She’s excited to travel more and dreams of eventually settling in Europe or the Middle East, with places like Turkey or the UAE high on her list. With family in Egypt and Saudi Arabia, her global journey is just getting started!

While she’s most excited about the opportunity to study at a world-renowned university, meeting new people, and immersing herself in new cultures, Maya admits she’s a little nervous about such a big change. She will have to learn to navigate visas and credit cards to adjusting to smaller apartments, new streets, and driving on the opposite side of the road. (Luckily, she’ll be bringing her cat along for the adventure!)

What she’ll miss most is the comfort of knowing what to expect. Having grown up in America and moving to South Carolina in 8th grade from Kansas, this next chapter will be a whole new world. Classes begin in early September, with a move planned for August, and her dad is even considering making the move as well.

Although she’s still waiting to hear back from a few other applications, we LOVE seeing our Vikings dream big and reach far and wide. 🌍💙 Congratulations, Maya, we can't see all that you will accomplish!
